What are HDMI and DVI Cables?

When you use electronic devices in your home or office, you must have the proper cables in order for them to work properly. With the many types of cable available, how would you know which ones are the best ones for you to use? Two of the cables that are in the highest demand are HDMI cables and DVI cables. Although they are similar in some aspects, there are subtle differences that you need to be aware of.

The DVI cable was released in 1999. DVI is an acronym for Digital Visual Interface and carries uncompressed digital video date to a display. When these cables first came on the market, they were primarily used for connecting the computer monitor to the tower, but today, these cables are used for television set connection. If you are not familiar with the use of the DVI cable, you may encounter some confusion when you want to purchase the one you need. This is because there are three connection types with DVI cables. DVI-D refers to digital cable, DVI-A is for analog television and DVI-I is the one you need if you have both digital and analog.

The other cable that is in high demand is the HDMI cable. HDMI is an acronym for high definition multimedia interface. This is a newer form of cable introduced in 2002 to coincide with the introduction of high definition television. The HDMI cable is an all-digital video interface cable that can transmit uncompressed streams of data. With this cable, you can bring in both audio and video signals.

Both cables will enable you to see the images on your television screen. However, the HDMI is the better cable of the two because of the all-digital features. Thus you have more advantages when you buy this type of cable over the DVI cable.

One of the things you have to be careful of when buying cables for your television set is to get the one that is recommended for your particular TV. Read through your owner’s manual to find which type of cable you need to buy. You should also double-check the cable before you make the purchase to ensure that it is compatible with your television or computer monitor. Different cables can affect the electronic devices you use them with in different ways and some of these ways can be harmful.

When shopping for the cables for your electronic devices, it also pays to shop around for the best deal. With many retailers offering both DVI and HDMI cables, there may often be sales where you can save money. Shopping online is an avenue where you can realize fantastic savings in the prices of the various cables. In addition to saving money by shopping online, you can also shop at any time you please without having to leave your home. The cables arrive at your door and all you have to do is connect them to the devices and start working or watching. Being informed about the differences in the cables is an important aspect of getting the most enjoyment from the electronic devices you use.
