So you are ready to set up your home entertainment room. When doing so there are several things that you should consider to make the room both cost efficient and cool. There are so many choices available for all of the components that will go into the design of your room. You will not want to just go out and buy the first system you see. Take some time and effort to decide what is right for you and your home. So where do you start?

The first step would be to decide how much you want to spend. Most of us think that to get the “best” components we will have to spend a great deal of money. This is not always the case. You can find components that are considered outdated technology (a few months old in some cases) for a reasonable price.

Next would be to draw a floor plan. In doing so, make sure that you map out all of your electrical outlets. Start by determining the best position for the television. Then move on to seating, speakers and even lighting for the best experience possible. Good rooms have two main aspects, the electronic equipment and the space that the equipment occupies.

A basic home theater system is made up of 3 basic components. A television, DVD or Blu Ray player and speakers. You can add many other components, but this is the minimum to get you started. Which brands are best, do I want DVD or Blu Ray and do I want 3 speakers or 5? You can answer these questions by doing some research. The internet is filled with websites that review hundreds of products. Go to your local electronics store. Talk to your neighbors and friends to see what they have and how they like theirs.

Another aspect of your home entertainment room will be the furniture. We are not only talking about the couch and chairs, but the television and speaker stands that you may want to purchase. Again, you can do your homework and find the best deals and brands for your needs.

This may seem more trouble than it is worth. Trust me, the more research you do on the front side of this project, the better off that you will be. If you are having trouble finding a good place to start, check out my website www.homeentertainmenttoday.com for more information. Good luck and enjoy your new home entertainment room. Don’t forget the popcorn.

Fed up with finding the remotes of each of your electronic devices, then a universal remote control comes as an easy answer. In general a universal remote is a remote control that can be easily programmed to operate various brands and one or more types of electronics devices such as TV, music system, Air-conditioners and many other devices. Typically, the low-end universal remote controls can only control a set number of devices pre defined by their manufacturer, while the mid- and high-end universal remote controls allow the user to program in new controls codes to the remote for controlling a number of other devices. With the increasing use of the universal remote controls many remotes sold with various electronic devices include universal remote capabilities for other types of device, which allow the remote to control other devices apart from the device it came with.

The universal remote controls can be broadly classified in two types like

Device Based Universal Remote Controls
Most universal remote controls that are sold today are device based and they are quite popular. The use of the device-based remote control is simple and the user has to press a button associated with the desired device to control and then uses the remaining buttons to control that single device. Controlling other devices is also simple as the remote control identifies the other devices when the user presses a different device button and then the remote starts sending command to the new device. An example of a device-based remote is the Home Theater Master line of remotes.

Activity Based Remote Control
These types of the universal remote controls are programmed to work on the concept of activities and not on the devices. In this instead of controlling each device individually the user can instead focus on the activity that they want to perform. For instance the user might want to watch a movie, or listen some music, or just watch TV. It is when a particular activity is selected the universal remote control may send out the necessary signals and commands to various necessary devices in to turn on and to configure device to accomplish the desired activity. For instance selecting an activity like watch a movie the universal remote control might turn on the TV, configure the TV to the DVD video input, turn on the amplifier, configure the amplifier to the DVD audio input, turn on the DVD player, and start the DVD playing. One of the most popular activity based remote controls is the Logitech Harmony line of remotes.

The journey with the universal remote control just doesn’t stops there, but can continue with the up gradations that are required with the changing electronic devices. That is why many universal remote controls allow the code lists programmed into the remote to be updated to support new brands or models of devices not currently supported by the remote. Interestingly the lower end universal remote controls accomplish this by allowing audible signals to be sent over a telephone to a receiver on the remote. This is applicable when the user calls phone’s speaker and then send a signal over the telephone to upgrade the remote for any requested new brand of model of supported device type.

If you already have a Sky+ Digibox, shut down and allow the Hard Disk to rest before unplugging or switching off from the mains. Unplug the cables from the rear of the existing box and unscrew the F-Connectors attaching the Coax and remove the box. Replace the old box with a new one and reconnect the Coax. Make sure that you are not connecting the telephone line into the RJ-45 Ethernet socket even by mistake.

Software updating: Hold down the ‘BACK UP’ button on the top of the unit and power up the unit by switching it on and plugging it in the socket. On powering up you can see that four lights are turned on, on the front of the unit. Release it after 30 seconds and you can see the lights are out. Now the box will be in standby mode. Wait for two more minutes.

Ensure that the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Input) cable is connected, if you already have an HD ready TV. You can also connect the same in a traditional way using SCART if your HD TV needs its High Definition Multimedia Input to be enabled. If your Television has the digital connection disabled, remove your viewing card from the existing box and place it in the new box.

Take the box out of standby mode so you can view the Sky+ HD demo screen. If you are not able to view this, scroll through your input options and double check your connections.

Press Services ’ 4, 0, 1 on your remote control and then press Select and scroll down to get INSTALLER SETUP. Follow: Installer Setup ’ Select and scroll down again to get NEW INSTALLATION. Follow: New Installation ’ Select and now scan for the available channels. You will get a window showing a channel line up or a screen showing the satellite signal length. Click OK to begin the callback process. At this point make sure that the box is connected to the phone to send the details to Sky.

For pairing the card to the new box you have to inform Sky that you have a new Digibox and that you want to use the Sky+ facility. Contact Sky for activation and after activation you can experience Sky High Definition.

By Jack A Smith

Very briefly, the screen in a plasma TV is made up of array of pixels, and each individual pixel contains a gaseous substance. The pixels receive charge from a set of electrodes producing photons, giving away ultraviolet light. The light particles generated fall on the pixel wall which is coated with phosphor. When you view the same channel for a long time, or play the same game on your Plasma TV for long hours, the phosphor on the pixel wall may age more in certain areas and start to produce lights of less intensity. At times, with continued lights from the phosphor, the screen is liable to get burn-in, leaving a shadow of an image on the screen. To avoid plasma TV burn-in, you will have to use your plasma TV in a balanced way and avoid leaving the same TV channel or playing the same game for many hours in a row.

With the same image being maintained on the screen for a long period of time, especially true when you go on playing the same game for hours or watching the same TV channel, the still image on the screen of your Plasma TV creates a constant current flow in each of the pixels, which ages the phosphor wall of the pixels more in that area. The TV screen would have, by that time, lost the capability to produce true colors owing to the weakening of the phosphor wall. The condition of the burn-in effect will be such that, a weak shade of the picture will continue to be visible on the screen. Burn-in causes hindrance in displaying other images, as and when the affected areas of the screen want a change in pixel’s color.

To avoid burn-in you should avoid display of static pictures on your TV screen for long periods of time. Modern TV designs have been able to add functions which would automatically avoid burn-in to a certain extent. However, many of us still have older models, where we need to take precautions to prevent burn-in from taking place. The best way to avoid burn-in is not to put your TV on pause for a long time while you leave your TV set switched on, watch diversified content and properly calibrate your TV.

The modern plasma TVs use anti-burn-in features like pixel orbiter, which keeps on shifting the image in order to reduce the effect of a possible burn-in. When burn-in occurs, it leaves a shadow image on the screen, which may be of a logo, computer icons, Internet browser frames, or an entire image which was left on for longer hours. This makes the watching unpleasant so you want to do your best to avoid getting burn-in on your plasma TV.

This is one of the aspects that you would need to find out when buying a plasma TV. You must make sure that the features do mention about protection against burn-in when you make a selection for the plasma TV that you want or buy a plasma TV model from a newer generation because those are less susceptible to get burn-in. While handling your plasma TV, you must remember that it is prone to burn-in especially during the first 200 hours of operation. This is because the phosphors are fresh at the start, and intense burning takes place when they are ignited as you switch on your Plasma TV. Because of this, the first thing you should do when buying a plasma TV is to properly calibrate it, reducing its contrast and brightness settings. This not only makes it less susceptible to burn-in but it also increases the lifespan and gives you more accurate colors and a better overall picture quality.

The best way to avoid burn-in is to buy one of the best plasma TV models Come to our site and see which are those and read more useful guides. More than just knowing what to do to avoid burn-in, you should know how to maintain your plasma TV in the long run. Read the Plasma TV Maintenance & Cleaning guide to find out how to do so. The Plasma TV Calibration guide is also very useful because it teaches you how to properly calibrate your plasma TV in order to get the best picture quality, extend its life and prevent burn-in.

We have all been there (Or at least the gadget lovers amongst us have!). Waiting anxiously by the doormat to hear that friendly ring from the postman that means our shiny new gadget has finally arrived. Exciting stuff.

Now, if it is something small and self contained like an iPhone or an iPod then all is well with the world. You can generally just take it out of the box and figure it it out as you go along. There will be no trailing wires or cabling to mess up your tidy rooms, because thankfully, those gadgets are portable and so don’t infringe on anything much (apart from your enjoyment levels, which they will hopefully infringe on quite a lot!)

But if it is a bigger gadget purchase like a computer, a home theater system, or a new audio system then you are going to be in for much more of a shock. Because the simple fact is that these devices haven’t evolved nearly as much as you might have expected on the cabling side. You see, 10 years ago everyone was touting the potential for a ‘wireless’ age (actually at much the same time that a ‘paperless’ age was being touted, and look how far we have come with that ten years down the line!)

And in some respects strides have been made. The fact that there are now wireless networks, and that gadgets like the iPhone are actually sneaking out of the development hatches and onto the high street are certainly big steps forward. But, in reality, in many areas of gadgetry, when it comes to connecting you new, freshly delivered toy, you will find that you will be buried up to your armpits in cables.

This is especially true of home theater systems, audio systems and computers (laptops are a lot better these days, because wireless networks are becoming easier to use in that arena). And it is really an area that you need to give separate thought to, BEFORE you take delivery of your new system. Or, at the very least at the same time. Because it is very common for gadgets to be delivered WITHOUT all the cables that are required for their operation.

For example, I recently took delivery of a swanky, new DVD Player. All good so far. Equipped for the digital age this baby had hdmi connectors. The works. So it was all setup for the high definition age. Apart from one thing…

No cables!!

Now, as it happened I planned ahead, and bought a beautiful gold, connector hdmi cable at the same time as I bought the dvd player. So all was right with the world. And I was able to get playing immediately, because they were delivered at the same time. But, my point is that planning ahead really is a necessity, not a luxury these days. Gadgets used to ship without plugs! Now they ship without cables. Go figure!

So, step one, figure out what cables you need. And my advice here is to buy the very best you can afford. There is no point spending £2000 on a fab new tv, and then skimping on a £5 cable to carry the signal to it! That’s like having a Porsche to drive, but then only bothering to put three tyres on it! So, upgrade the cables to something decent. This need not cost fortunes. But spending £50 can improve the picture quality (speaking of high definition tvs here) much more then you would think. The picture will be smoother, and the sound better. So, a worthwhile investment.

Secondly, take a look at the layout of your room, and consider where cables would be least obtrusive. This is a bigger factor with audio systems, where you may need trailing wires to four corners of a room to get quadrophonic sound. But consider whether you can put the wires under carpets, or whether you can get trunking fitted, or even (for the very committed!) sink the wires in the walls, so they don’t show at all.

Thirdly, get some cable tags. These are dirt cheap, but will tidy up your workspace like you can’t believe. A £5 dollar investment in a bag of cable tags will provide dividends for your sanity down the road!

So, put these suggestions into action and start to enjoy your new gadget, without having to dwell on the cables!

Console gaming has been going from strength to strength over the last 20 years - from the simple games of consoles like the Saga Mastersystem and Nintendo Entertainment System to the ongoing battle of the mighty Sony Playstation 2 and Microsoft Xbox, each new generation of games and gaming consoles out-doing the previous in graphics, game play and depth.

With the arrival of high definition televisions came the arrival of the latest gaming generation, high definition games consoles. Microsoft released the first console - the Xbox 360 in late 2006, supporting full 1080p HD capabilities whilst keeping backwards-capabilities for normal TV’s.

Then in mid 2007 came Sony’s beast - the Playstation 3. Both consoles were power-houses in their own right, supporting numerous processors running multiple cores allowing for truly staggering results.

As with all consoles the initial games released were ok, the graphics were good and game play also good, but all with a lot of room for improvement - and as the games programmers became more comfortable with the new machines and learnt the techniques the games started improving, not just in game play but in visuals also.

Leading into 2008 and both consoles have a large number of games available, both have dropped in price dramatically and both have evolved through updates to both the operating systems and online networks they run on.

With releases of games such as Halo 3 (for the xbox 360) and Grand Theft Auto 4 (for both consoles - a game that is breaking a lot of records at the time of writing) it’s hard to see how these consoles can improve, how the almost life-like graphics can be beefed up or what the future can hold (maybe a Playstation 4 or Xbox 640?) in just a couple of years…..

The display itself is very impressive, producing deep dark blacks with a vivid colour range and sharp picture quality, the full high definition resolution allows for full 1080p video without the need to ’scale’ the picture to fit the screen.

Conectivity is povided by 3 HDMI ports aswell as 3 SCART sockets, component and composite inputs along with a PC connector. On top of this the TH50PZ700 also comes with a built in SDHC/SD memory card reader for displaying photo’s direct on the screen.
Complementing Vreal technology is Panasonic’s ‘Deep Black Filter’ and ‘Real Black Drive’ technologies which build upon the companies already legendary black level performance capabilities.

Panasonic’s impressive ‘Viera Link’ technology is present on the TH50PZ700 and uses high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) connections to automatically control similarly enabled devices using a single remote.
